“Cervical Cancer: Understanding Causes, Recognizing Symptoms, and Exploring Treatment Options”

Cervical cancer, a pressing global health issue, witnessed around 604,000 diagnoses and 342,000 fatalities in 2020. As the fourth most common cancer in women, it stems from abnormal cell growth in the cervix—the gateway to the uterus from the vagina, as outlined by the World Health Organization (WHO).

While widespread, early detection renders cervical cancer highly treatable. Notably, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman underscored the government’s commitment to incentivize vaccination for girls aged 9 to 14 in the 2024 Interim Budget, aiming to thwart cervical cancer.

Causes :

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the primary culprit behind 99% of cervical cancer cases. This common sexually transmitted infection affects the throat, genitals, and skin, often presenting without symptoms. Persistent HPV infection may lead to abnormal cell growth, progressing to cancer. Factors like weakened immune systems, early motherhood, hormonal contraceptive use, smoking, and other STIs heighten the risk.

Recognising Symptoms:

Recognition of symptoms is pivotal for early diagnosis. WHO outlines indicators such as unusual bleeding, increased vaginal discharge, persistent pain, weight loss, fatigue, vaginal discomfort, and leg swelling.

Exploring Treatment Options:

Seeking diagnostic confirmation from healthcare professionals is crucial for symptomatic individuals. Treatment modalities encompass surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and secondary care for pain management.

As global efforts intensify against cervical cancer, raising awareness and ensuring accessible healthcare are paramount. Stay informed about causes, symptoms, and treatment options to empower individuals in the fight against cervical cancer.
